That is one cool guy.
It’d be so much easier to do something like this in Flash or Illustrator, but it’s still interesting to see how you could do it in PS.
I like tracing the lines with the pen, but jeez that has to be time-consuming as hell.

Awesome tut. One thing that is often overlooked when creating cartoon images is the colour of the outline. You have shown that it doesnt have to be all black! Attention to detail is great! Now if only I could draw like that…..

You could also trace your sketch with a medium to heavy weight Sharpie (to make nice, consistent thick lines), and bring the scan into Illustrator to perform a live trace (you’ll prolly have to do some clean up on the vector). Then bring the vector outline into PS as a smart object and do the rest of your coloring from there. Depending on the illustration, you can save yourself a ton of work. Of course that approach isn’t really suited for PSDTUTS.
Nice tut though.

Tracing a whole drawing in PS..not my idea of fun, i also dont like doing it in illustrator..actually the only program I enjoy vector drawing with is Flash. Easy and simple.

That’s a great tutorial. Bummer thing it actually requires a certain amount of artistic ability as a pre-requisite. Now if only there were a plug-in for illustration…
Great job!

If you no skill at drawing and you have a Wacom tablet you can cheat:
Pick out a drawing you wanna copy and print it out the size of your Wacom tablets size and tape it to it.
Then just ‘trace’ the drawing with your stylus.
But drawing is not hard. just liked anything else<<<practice, practice, practice.
And of course, there’s tons of drawing tut’s online. (youtube etc)

I have to say this tutorial is very disappointing, its just a low quality rip off of this one: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/02/13/drunken-monkey-photoshop-tutorial/
The drawing style, the colors, even the tutorial itself is a low quality clone.
I would go further, he ripped the bottom part of the character, there is lot of difference in terms of quality respect the top part of the character. I will do some research for you PSDtuts.

July 10th, 2008
It explains how the drawing was made very well,… but…
hmm,… nope sorry. Not very useful.
Not everyone can draw, and drawing and coloring styles differ with every person.
Also, I think vectoring is a better approach, …
..and it would be better to use the pen tools shape layers, as they’re non-raster.

why not just use illustrator? this tutorial leaves you stuck with a bitmap when you could migrate to illustrator after step two and have a vector file.

I agree Jason. anyway either way its obvious how to create this either in PS or AI the only part that can’t be taught is drawing

Such a good tutorial, that’s a real PSDTUTS tutorial !
Anton
July 11th, 2008
I did some research and I was right in every point.
As I said before, this tutorial sounds very fischy, this guy just ripped this tutorial: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/02/13/drunken-monkey-photoshop-tutorial/
He just drew the head of the character: http://klops05.deviantart.com/art/pencil-lines-73020023 The rest was ripped from another artist, just take a look to the previous image, that is his real skill.
Im sorry PSDTuts, but I have to say… you need to do some research before posting tutorials, newbies like this one can ruin your wonderful site.

July 12th, 2008
Nice TUT!
Love the quality of your linework - basically the inking stage from comics. I would do the ink work in illustrator as though and bring it back into PS as a smart object, your then safe with any size your mascot needs to go as the inklines will remain crisp! I did a massive caricature this way and all I had to do was adjust some of the colour behind the smart object inks for 5mins and it was resized no problemo!
If you wanna add some spice and texture to your colouring as well, I’d really recommend trying differing brushes for some nice effects. Gotta love PS! Being able to draw as well tho really adds a huge bonus!

July 14th, 2008
@Levi Ortiz - Thanks for clearing that up. We take copyright issues really serious, so I’m happy to know everything’s OK. Especially, since it’s a great tutorial.
@Anton - We appreciate your diligence. I think Levi has cleared up the origin of the character now though. I was a little concerned at first, after looking at the sketch you linked to. Thx.
Also, I think Sergio’s tutorial on Smashing Magazine is great. We’ve referenced it on the site and in the interview he did here on PSDTUS. We’re actually working with Sergio to make a tutorial for PSDTUTS.
This tutorial, “Learn How to Make Your Own Cartoon Mascot” is unique though. There will always be some similarity when it’s the same subject matter. Let me know if you have an issue with anything specific. I think Darinka did a great job here, and the tutorial is an education addition to the community. Thx.

Excellent as always! I really love that you stress the color call-outs and the attention to detail/thickness in the line-work. I’d suggest also converting the selections to Vector Masks before filling them with color so you have a fully scalable vector image when all that hard work is finished. Keep up the fantastic work!
