Introductions!

In News by Collis
Hello, my name is Collis and I'm the person who's been writing the tutorials here (so far). I thought I'd write a quick welcome/introduction post to say hello to everyone now that we have finished moving the site to Wordpress! This site has been around for a little while, but it's only a few weeks ago that we decided to take it a little more seriously since the tutorials here seem to be quite popular. I thought this was a little mysterious since there are tons of Photoshop tutorial sites around, but I suppose its hard to separate the good from the bad.

In any case, you can look forward to lots of tutorials here, some by me and hopefully some by you out there! If you'd like to contribute, you should read about the guidelines first. We are only going to be accepting the best of the best tutorials, so please understand that that means a very high turn-down rate. This is just so that we can make this site superbad :-)

A word about me

About 8 years ago I started learning Photoshop through tutorials myself. Back then I used to go to DeviantArt.com and post stuff there, at the time it had only thousands of artworks instead of millions as it does now. I'd link to my old portfolio on DA but frankly its a bit embarrassing now (though I remember at the time thinking it was the bomb!) Anyhow from Photoshop tutorials I taught myself more and more web design, and design in general, by devouring books on typography, print, grids, and whatever I could get my hands on. These days I'd like to think I'm a pretty decent designer, and I've won a few awards here and there for websites. But it all started with Photoshop, which is why I still love tutorials to this day. So hopefully the tutorials on this site help you on your own path to creativity!

How you can help PSDtuts

Happily there are a couple of really easy ways that you can help us out on the site. Whenever a tutorial is posted, you'll see three buttons underneath for Digg, Delicious, and StumbleUpon. We'd really appreciate it if you'd vote for the tutorials on any (or all!) of these three sites. A few tutorials have been Dugg so far and it brings lots of traffic and means more and more people benefit from them (which is nice not only because we get to sell more ads, but because they take quite a few hours to write!)
If you enjoyed this post, your vote is always highly appreciated!! Delicious StumbleUpon Float Reddit Bump This!

  1. Keep the good stuff coming, man. Your site is set apart by its clean design, unobtrusive ad space and incredibly useful content.

  2. Thanks Stephen! Wait till you see the tutorial I just finished, I’m supposed to wait a few days before I post it, but I tend to get a bit excited and want to post immediately so you may see it surface in the next few hours :-)

  3. Awesome site man! I have a tutorial site as well and have been designing for just about 2 years now (learned from tutorials). I have been getting better at a much slower pace lately since there aren’t many tutorials that tell me what I don’t already know, but I don’t know how to do most of the stuff on your tutorials so they’re helping me learn some new stuff :). Love the clean design too. BTW, if you have AIM let me know I’d love to talk.

  4. BUEN TRABAJO -really good job-

  5. Grt job Collis, really liked the tutorial of the glowing lines. Thanks a LOT.:)

  6. I just want to thank you for the things that I have learned so far from you! I am so excited for the tutorials to come!

    Thanks Collis!

  7. Great job! I found this site through Digg post of advanced glow tutorial and I bookmarked it immediatly.

    Keep up posting these tutorials.

  8. Hi.
I must say, i am very impressed. looking at the tutorials, I was sure it was some pro i-have-studied-20-years-art kind of designer. Really good job!
    Keep going!

  9. hehe thanks Ramses! It’s nice having so many people being so enthusiastic, I’m glad we moved to a format that includes comments :-)

  10. cool, your site (and its content) is enrich what your gallery-sister-site stated : ” not all design are created equal” .
    way to go Collis ;)

  11. Your tutorials are top-notch, some of the best I’ve seen so far!
I’m definitely looking forward to even more of them, keep it up :).

  12. I must say that I love your approach! This site is really very user friendly and a great resource.

    Cheers!

  13. Hi Collis MANY MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY.

  14. Great website with some great photoshop tips. Can’t wait to try some of these techniques out. Thanks.

  15. Just a thought, as I noticed your site acting a bit slow (though if you’ve been dugg, as it seems, good job keeping the site up!), would it be possible to have an RSS feed that only includes the introduction and the “here’s what we’re going to make” pic?

My feed reader (sage) displays the past ten articles, and all of the images in them! Your tutorials are so wonderfully detailed that it’s a bit much for my poor reader, and a ‘digest’ version would be much appreciated!

  16. Tops site, and by far the best tutorials I’ve seen in ages. I hope you’ve got a good server behind you ’cause this site is going to go nuts.

I agree with Ian above, a cut down feed would be great.

    Keep up the good work

  17. Thanks guys! Ian & Elton, I’ve changed the feed to just be the title/image. I think you’re right actually, its better to send people back to the site anyhow.

Meanwhiles server was achingly slow for the last 24 hours after we got dugg, that new tutorial was just too intense for digging, too many steps. So i’m moving images to Amazon S3 which should make the site perform under load a little better in future :-)

  18. Top notch job you’ve done here! I’m very glad you’ve taken the time to put this together. Excellent tutorials are clear and easy to follow. I’m a very visual learner and this is what I was looking for!

  19. I just stumbled on your site a couple of days ago, but I think it looks very good. The tutorials seem very good and I think I am gonna try some of them out.

    Thanks for your hard work.

  20. It’s like watching Bert Monroy only you don’t refer to everything as “this guy.” Awesome.

  21. you know you are awesome

I found this site through good-tutorials.com and the glow tutorial is the best one out that i have seen so i bookmarked immediately and joined up…thanks for the hard work ill see if i can contribute in the near future

  23. Hey, I really loved the advanced glow tutorial, I was surprised how good my results were. If you are into design, check out terragen; it’s a landscape creator and it’s really simple to use. Look at my site layout to get an idea.

  24. Hi Collis. I have been watching this website a few days now and I think its great! You did a fantastic job on writing the tutorials so detailed. Keep it up!

  25. You are amazing, I’m still in highschool but your tutorials have definitely put me very far ahead of where i was last year, not only did they refresh my cartoony designs but they helped lead me into my own personal style, thank you so much.

  26. Amazing stuff, keep it up. Maybe one day i’ll be as good as you. looking forward to that day =)

  27. Perhaps you should create a nice tutorial on Wordpress design- this looks great! I actually found you by way of StumbleUpon a while ago, and continued to follow for the tuts, and your wonderful choice of browns! Keep up the good work!

  28. You should have a tutorial on creating templates for WordPress in Photoshop. This one is one rad theme.

  32. Thanks for all the great tutorials. I run an agency, and while we know Photoshop, we’re always looking for new techniques and ideas that we can use on the fly. Every tutorial here is so well explained and detailed, that we’re able to find something perfect, and that we can grasp quickly. Plus, it’s making us better PS users. Thanks, and keep the great tutorials coming!

Photoshop is a never ending learning experience, I don’t care who you are or how long you’ve been doing it. This site is awesome and many thanks for your efforts.

  34. Didn’t read this post until now, but thanks for the intro!

  35. You got some really darn good tutorials on this site and I love the design too, I hope to have tutorials as good quality as yours on my own site some day.
