What Do You Think Would Make a Great PSDTUTS Contest?
In News by Sean HodgeWe've got a quick contest update. Also, we'd like to know what you think would make a great contest. It's not long before we'll be launching the next contest, as we'd like to do this monthly. We want to continue to make the contests here successful. Leave a comment letting us know what you think would make a great PSDTUTS contest. Feel free to throw multiple ideas out.
Brainstorming Ideas for New Contests
We're seeing a lot of participation in this month's AudioJungle Wallpaper Design contest, and the first PSDTUTS contest went great as well. We want to keep this momentum going. If you have any suggestions on contests you'd like to see run here, let us know. The monthly contests have been a success so far, let's brainstorm a bit as a community to keep this going.
Leave a comment indicating what you think would make a great PSDTUTS contest. I'm sure we've all got some great ideas we could add. As with any brainstorming session, just throw ideas out! We want to here what you think will make a great contest!
Here are a few ideas I have to get the ball rolling on this. We could have a poster contest, maybe focus on movie posters, or something retro. We could have a contest that is based on designing websites, or an icon design contest, maybe focused on a theme. These are kind of general ideas, but you get the idea. Let us know what you think would make a good contest! Thanks!
This Month's AudioJungle Contest is Going Strong
We have over 100 images submitted in this month's AudioJungle Wallpaper Design contest. Also, the quality of submissions is really high. Check out the submitted entries at this link. There is still plenty of time before the end of the month to get your submission in. It's going to be difficult deciding the winners!
Sponsors
We thank our sponsors for supporting this contest. The sponsors are listed below.
New Sponsors
If you would like to sponsor this contest then let us know. We'll consider adding you to the list. Let us know what you could offer as a prize to members of PSDTUTS. Think of things that digital artists or designers could utilize. Use our Contact Form to let us know.

1) Choose a famous quote from a person in history, participants have to design a piece based on what that quote means to them.
2) One for Nettuts, make available a simple HTML file with no styling or layout elements. Participants must not alter this file, and build a stylesheet to make the html file look as good as possible. Similar to the idea of CSSZengarden.com.
I will post more ideas later.

1. Create an entirely new effect using only Photshop and no stock photography.
2. Select a limited number of photos, say two or three and create a design using only those.
3. A Photshop “tool” contest. Select one of the Photoshop tools, i. e. the pen tool or the history brush tool, and make a design based on that. Make things trickier by limiting the number of tools allowed…

Well i know its weird but one topic i really fascinated about is ascension.
Being able to go above the normal limit’s. and if you could what strengths would you give yourself.
The explosion tutorial gave us a good example of what that could be like.
I think it will also be a good contest because it involves people.
If you could become stronger what would you give yourself
here are a few examples.
Flight, Telepathy, Nature Manipulation

As for my idea, contestants submit very short tutorials. Nothing complicated, just tips and tricks that would be useful for beginners. Beginners like me.

So you can make a house and a sea. a rare combination but thats just the beauty of all.
Just smash al your prints in eachother and make a nice outcome

BEST CONTEST IDEA; colorize an artists lineart or a BnW photo.
In my experience this format is always where the best discussion is opened up, where the most creative insight is needed and where attention to detail is a must.

I thought maybe following on from Nik’s tutorial, you could give us a face which we have to edit in any way we want, think it would bring out some cool ideas.
I also like Josh’s NETTUTS contest idea, think that would be good cos it would combine VECTORTUTS and PSDTUTS so we were making the graphics for the page aswell, I guess not everyone can code and use Photoshop though.

If you ave to fight for something, fight with tutorials for the winning money.
PSDTuts will have a ton of new tuts + you will have the chance to win some money
The best tut, that shows pure awesomeness, wins !

Hey everybody,
Some great ideas here, keep them coming! The contest idea brainstorming sessions is going great. I’m avoiding commenting on any specific ideas at this point. I think this is the time were we really just get as many good ideas out as we can. Then later we start to analyze them.
@Dave - feel free to use our contribute form to send in an idea. It’s located on our contribute page. We really need to get a general email form setup. I’ll put that request in. Though use the contribute form for now http://www.formspring.com/forms/?285484-26dtvVnE2a
I had a couple more ideas. I thought it would be cool to have a collaboration contest. So, you would have to partner up to enter and win. Then you’d pass the design file back and forth between you and another designer and you’d both share the prize.
Also, I’ve seen people mentioning ways that more than one Tuts site could be involved. So, maybe something that combines pixels and vector graphics to bring Vectortuts into it in some way.
Lot’s of great ideas! Keep them coming!

PSD Speed Contest?
I think it would be cool to do a speed contest. Where everyone gets together at a certain time with a time limit and then the moderator puts up a theme or concept (maybe some pictures/textures) and everyone tries their best to complete something in say an hour or two hours. Maybe have to have two separate contests/themes for time zone issues.
I have seen this done in the 3d world, its called speed modeling, over at Deviant Art.
The only problem, and not to be to down on myself, is that I don’t think I would be able to compete against you guys in my own contest idea

June 23rd, 2008
I think it would be fun to host a contest for the most creative way to promote PSDTUTS. This would include online/offline options - really anything people can dream up. So hopefully this would encourage people to experiment with fun/unique ways to promote the website. Bumper stickers, posters, maybe a video on Youtube of shouting about it in a mall, wearing a psdtuts tshirt for a whole week and blogging about it. I’m sure people could come up with some hilarious ways that would draw a lot of attention to the website.
Joharin
June 23rd, 2008
1. Why not redesign something that is proven to be a bad design? Turn it into something WOW!

I have an idea that could probably be useful.
I was thinking that you provide a series of images that the participants will use to create a Photomanipulation. The same goes for other things like prints and so on.
Also a very interesting contest will be a website or template contest. Here you can also place a theme “cleanest template” or “most interesting” or “most complicates website”.
Or I was thinking of something like a team contest. This sounds a bit strange but I was thinking to something like one person designs something than he needs to give his work to another person and that second person needs to maybe improve the work, add something to it, use or change something from that work to make it better. And finally the best collaboration wins. I think this needs more thinking to it but I consider it to be an interesting contest.

It would be cool to see
*See who can redesign a car, like changing the color, lowering, tint, decal designs, background manipulation etc…
*Create a club flyer, with the details that you offer us. Whoever can best portray the details with the best typography, catch the audience the best, understand the principles of art etc in the design of the club flyer wins.
*You have to create an original tutorial that is mind blowing, so everyone can contribute, and if they dont win, but have a great tut, you can still post it.
*Morphing a celebrities face
*Creating a web site design layout in photoshop
But I would really like to the the club flyer one or car design.
Tell me what you think!

Creating a ‘PSDTUTS’ template or wordpress theme that is then sold via a post on the blog (and perhaps in the sidebar for a limited time). The creator gets 100% of the profits from sales, PSDTUTS gets a lot of interest and time spent designing a theme based on their website. I think that it’s a potential for some designers to earn a lot of money whilst increasing the brand awareness of PSDTUTS.

1. Luv Constantin idea’s of collobaration, probably would be better if we could combine all the ‘tuts’, for example someone designs brushes & vectors (vectortuts), then another person uses the ‘new tools’ to design something else in photoshop (psdtuts), and finally someone else integrates the design into a web portal…who knows, this could be the new web revolution…3.0!!!
2. Probably Collis and the management team could find a company with a new product that needs designs for their site, their poster/flyers/etc…psdtuts make money, the winner makes money, and the company received high hypes for the product! This could be combined with putting all the designs on t-shirt and so on!

Well let me say Im in love with PSD, so Im willing to help as much as possible to achieve the goal of ultimate web domination. Im guessing you want something generally global so people can let their creative juices flowing. Ill just pump out a few ideas for the topics you brought up in your post.
Poster:
Natural Elements (Such as fire, water, and wind.)
Vintage (Either old school, or old and used style.)
PSD Poster
1960 - 1970
Pin-up Girl (Might be a little advanced for the general skill level.)
Web Design or Icon ideas:
Natural Elements (Man I love this one.)
Sunshine

Themes:
Abstract.

Contemporary.
Future. (With the Poster idea “PSD Poster” and future combined, you get the future of PSD poster!)

1. How about creating some contests relating to design time periods. For example, a contest for the artists interpretation for the modern era or pop art era. Some of these tuts show high ornamentation that could be used for art nouveau time periods as well. This will double as using the tuts that deal with a time period as well as learning about art history in the process.
2. Through some of the posts I read, I agree with promoting or using the designs for a purpose. The banner idea is great, b/c I think designing a 90 px X 250 px banner is very difficult to convey a full message in such a small space. This is rewarding when the problem is solved. The more difficult the problem to be solved, the better designers will become. Setting limits will definitely help everyone become a better designer and bring more purpose to their work.
It’s one thing to have an amazing cool thing… it’s so much more when that amazingly cool things has a greater purpose and solves an intriguing problem.

The best idea for a contest would be to come up with either a top 101 styles, brushes, vectors PSD.

Expanding Plus members’ libraries is the key to success!

I’d like to see an all out battle royale of killer tutorials, tournament style. Put the final results of each tutorial up in brackets and have the loyal readers vote. I’d do a couple rounds to declare the winner, who gets a full blown feature on PSD tuts. It’d be fun for us, for the writers of the tuts as well as you guys (TONS of page views ahoy!).
Anyhoo, just my two cents.

Some more ideas from me
I realise my quote idea in the 4th comment may be a bit specific. What about a single word that people can realise in their own way? ‘Contrast’ for example is specific enough to be able to compare entries, (How well they demonstrate contrast), but is broad enough for people to interpret and design an amazing piece.

My ideas round 3
A mashup of a few ideas here. What about a zip/rar file is provided by the PSDTuts team consisting of resources, several stock images, brushes, vectors, 3d models, whatever. The task is for participants to use as many of the resources as possible to create the best image.
I can see this working as a way to get sponsors on board, a premium vector site may want to provide some vectors or brushes to use, stock photography sites may provide images, fonts, the list goes on.
If I haven’t explained this very well just shout and I’ll explain again

Well hopefully you read my post above. I was a little tired as it said in my post so here’s a revised plus improved version. Ill just specify some of my ideas before. Now that I read over my past post I realized it was pretty vague. I have the tendency to get a little specific sometimes, so if something has to much thought, almost any of these can be applied to themes, posters, or icons as long as you simplify them.
Poster:
Natural Elements (Such as fire, water, and wind. I would love to see how the community would respond to this.)
Vintage (Either old school, or old and used style. Maybe add the theme of a vintage garage sale.)
PSD Poster (This would be awesome for the community to show the support of PSD, if you mixed this up with another poster idea or even a theme this could get really interesting. Like Natural Elements and a PSD Poster.)
1960 - 1970 (Anything historic from that time period or earlier. The only reason I picked the 1960’s and 70’s is because most members can associate to those times. For example The Harlem Riots, Woodstock style theme, Apollo 11, or heck, Woman’s Equality! Sorry Ladies. )
Pin-up Girl (Might be a little advanced for the general skill level.)
Web Design or Icon ideas:
Natural Elements (Man I love this one.)
Sunshine
Edgy
Sleek
Themes:
Abstract.
Tattoo.
Contemporary.
Future. (With the Poster idea “PSD Poster” and future combined, you get the future of PSD poster!)
Obviously I like posters or variations the best. In my opinion the themes should just be a theme for the poster or icon, but thats just me. I would bring up “Pop-Art” and whatnot but they have been mentioned and Im sure you can picture some of the stuff members could make.

Anyway, PSD Tuts is great!

June 25th, 2008
A greater PSDTUTS Contest - no matter in what direction your pointing at - can only be achieved if there’s a meaning/goal behind each entry.
I’m not talking about to do a movieposter or something else. In fact that doesn’t matter. It’s also no question if someone is able to get along with only a brush or doing something within 30 seconds. Point is - a contest can be compared to a any work for a client you working for.
IMO - a design can please or not, it can be timeless or just another copy/paste work. What really matters and were I see the clue is to focus on the process of the design. It’s equal to questions like: Why did someone choose a certain technique and why was it the best choice?
Designers and Contest out there are mostly zeitgeist oriented. I believe that in twenty years most of our todays design will be more then oldfashion. But why are there designs who didn’t lost thier actuallity? My answer to that question is simple. They crafted something with a goal to achieve. Maybe I cannot really explain myself better but just remind the industrial design of the Turntable Technics MK2 SL-1200. It had no intention to be extraordinary, the only intention was to fit all it’s functionality with the approach - build to last.
So - the find an ending point - if you launch another contest, don’t just judge the final result. Judge the whole process and show it to others. Let it be part of the entries that each of the contesters have to clarify thier designprocess.
Or in other words - THE JOURNEY IS THE REWARD, Chinese Proverb.
Thanks for reading. Yours sincerly Frischmilch from Switzerland.

First, sorry for my english, I´ll try to do my best.
Imagine that you are a company that wants to sell a very strange and rare product (a musical washing machine, a railgun that change your way of thinking…whatever your could think). You need designers to create an imaginative campaign (maybe one poster to resume the goal)…..you have to send us a short briefing with a description of the product you want to sell and who we we have to sell it to.
See you!

A website redesign would be my choice.
Slashdot.org did this last year and the interest was phenomenal. It was a challenge because you can’t start from scratch, you need to abide by their brand guidelines, logo colour scheme and the general content and copy of the website. You could immediately recognise a professional from an ameteur through the design submissions.
How about a fictional redesign of a well known site we all use? How about PSDTuts.com? lol only joking, I love this website, but I’m sure we all have a website in mind that could do with a bit of jiggery pokery from the PSDTuts community? Food for thought

Hey I have just come up with a new idea.
How about a HEAD 2 HEAD contest. Actually more. You decide the images we are allowed to use to create something we want. Only one submission allowed. The works will not be visible until the end of the contest.
This kind of the contest can be structured or changed in many ways. I think this will be a very interesting contest.

I think a T-Shirt Contest would be fun if we had to use certain logo’s, text, or colors…..
